3 secrets to effective time investment

And getting to the lake on time.

It takes a certain amount of time to accumulate and assemble the proper equipment.  The team must be coordinated so everyone arrives at the predetermined project milestones to allow for all teams to continue the journey to the destination.

After the pre-launch sprint all the teams hit their goals and are aligned for the go live event during a very early batch updates.  All teams execute and they are off and running.

One hour into the new updates everyone applies to the licensing agency to certify their access to the data and to provide some frontline advice about the current conditions of the data pool.  Is there a lot or a little pressure on the data?  Which way are the winds blowing?  Have conditions changed in the last 48 hours?

These considerations can reflect the tip of the iceberg expressed in this book.  Many people kind of stumble through life without letting their light shine as bright as it could if they were guided by their vision instead of reacting to their emotions, shame, and guilt.

Fishing is the same way.  If you are going to feel guilty for catching a fish and taking it home for dinner, catch and release the animal after thanking it for coming up from the depths for you to marvel at its beauty and maybe take a selfie.  This creature can only be caught when it wants to bite your bait.

In the book, Elizabeth grace Saunders reminds that sometimes we over schedule ourselves and then make ourselves bad or wrong when we do not accomplish all those things.  One cannot go; fishing and hike to the mall and go for a picnic without bringing all that equipment.  Enjoy all those experiences and if you do not accomplish all those parts focus on the joy and gratitude for the ones you do achieve.  It all ways takes a while to accomplish big things and to do it one must maintain this focus over time and one good way to do that is to  establish some accountability partners.

Whenever I have gone on a solo hike I have always thought about the movie 127 hours.  In the film the main character is a master climber and outdoorsman who went to climb and no one knew where he was when he did not return.  When I headed to the Appalachian Trail for a journey I certainly told my wife where I would be and when I would be back.  So accountability partners are there to make sure you are still on track and no one’s project is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

To fish effectively you need to set your priorities.  To be more effective with life we need to set action based priorities.  “ I want to catch large mouth bass.  I will choose baits that are designed for this type of fish in the kind of freshwater lake one can find within 2 hours of New York City.  Prioritising action based choices gives one the daily repetitive and on-going steps to keep going on the path.  One can literally walk from Maine to Georgia on the App Trail.  But one cannot do it in one step, or in one day, or without help from other members of the team.

When we work on teams we need to set realistic expectations for ourselves and others we are building relationships of trust.  I would take friends fishing.  They always said they hadn’t been since they were kids or they would say they would get bored.  To set realistic expectations I would always tell them I am taking them fishing not catching.
